Thoughts on Losing Weight (Part 1)

I'm no stranger to losing weight. I feel like most of my adult life I've been either losing weight or gaining back what I lost on the last attempt.

My biggest weight loss was back in 2009-2010. In August of 2009, I joined the Slim 4 Life program. It changed its name to Slimgenics while I was going through the program. I started the program at a hefty 235 pounds. It remains the heaviest I have ever been. When I'm in the 220-235 range, my body gives me lots of signs that I'm at

an unhealthy weight. I sleep poorly and snore loudly, I get bad heartburn and acid reflux, I get shin splints and plantar fasciitis, I sweat easily and profusely, and some other

unpleasantness that I won't mention. Through the Slimgenics program, I lost 80 pounds; getting down to 155 pounds. I was able to do this in about six and a half months. Through that process, I learned a lot about what works when losing weight. What I didn't learn was how to make my habits permanent, and I managed to slowly gain it all back by 2018. The photo on the left is me at 155 pounds. The photo on the right is me a year and a half earlier.

In 2018, I was eating a mostly vegetarian diet, but I was was still gaining weight. I began to have red flags again that my weight was affecting my health. As motivation to lose weight, I joined Healthywage in January 2019. I bet $600 that I could lose 50 pounds in 6 months. I switched my diet to vegan, and cut most alcohol from my diet. I was successful. I lost a total of 52.5 pounds and won a prize of $1,706. Again, I did not focus on making permanent healthy habits, and as of August 2023, I was back up to 215 pounds.

In part 2, I'll go into what I have learned about what works for me when losing weight.
